It has to be first understood that essential oils like doTerra are very different from cooking oils like sunflower, canola, olive etc. There is no denying the fact that both essential oils and cooking oils have their own sets of benefits. Also, essential oils can not only be used to flavor and enhance foods but they have health benefits as well. You might think using essential oils in foods is a relatively new idea, but you would be wrong. Essential oils have been used all along in products like chewing gums, chocolates etc.
To begin with, oils like doTerra, which is a food grade essential oil, can be used not only in cooking but can also be used in beverages. doTerra oils are extracted from edible plants like lemon, oregano, lemon, thyme, basil etc. Therefore the best way to use doTerra oils would be to substitute them in foods that require seasoning, in other words, food that require herbs, spices, fruit juices and the like. The only thing that you need to remember is that these oils are highly concentrated as they are the extracted essences of the plants; hence using a small quantity of these oils in the food would be sufficient. doTerra oils as a matter of fact are much more potent than any other essential oils you might have used in the past.
While cooking your favorite recipe, all you would need to do is put in half a drop or at the most one drop of particular, do terra oil, into your cooking pot or vessel. The above mentioned quantity would be more than enough to give you the desired result. Remember doTerra oils are much more potent than dried and fresh herbs and spices. In fact there are
tricks you can use, so you get the quantity right. For example, if a recipe mentions that you have to use less than a teaspoon of herbs for a certain preparation; you could equate that quantity by simply dipping the tip of a toothpick into the center of a dripper cap and then swirling it around in your cooking vessel or beverage. That is how little a quantity you would require of doTerra oils to substitute herbs or spices, especially if you are using oils like bark oil, clove oil, ginger oil and oregano oil.
Another measurement which might prove helpful is if you are using an essential oil to substitute the zest of lemon, orange or tangerine. In order to replace the zest of one lemon, orange or tangerine, you could use anywhere between 8-14 drops of the corresponding doTerra essential oil. Also, for the oils to be more effective, it would be better if they are diluted/mixed in vegetable oil, almond, rice, or coconut milk before consumption, or they could also be mixed in the recipe. Another useful tip would be to add the oils in the food right before you serve them. In retrospect, it is extremely important to remember to use only food grade essential oils like doTerra for cooking. You can find some good recipes on Facebook found Here.
